Mercedes’ foray into the front-wheel drive market might yield even more vehicles than the company has currently announced.

There are currently four Mercedes underpinned by the company’s MFA front-drive architecture. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche told Automotive News that the company may expand further for the second generation arriving in 2018.

“We are considering the final portfolio of the next generation of our compact cars,” Zetsche said. “We have to define it and we may expand the portfolio.”

Currently, the company counts its new coupe-styled CLA, B-Class, upcoming GLA small crossover and A-Class among its front-drive models. A fifth front-wheel drive vehicle is also coming, but as with the A-Class, it won’t be sold in the U.S. The B-Class will, however arrive as an electric vehicle.

Zetsche didn’t elaborate on what the expanded line could include in the next generation, but past rumors suggest the company might be planning a larger CLS station wagon based on the CLA.
